Why Is This Important?
Laryngeal cancer, or throat cancer, is a cancer that forms in tissues of the larynx, which is the lower part of the throat also known as the "voice box." Laryngeal cancer accounts for 0.6% of all newly diagnosed cancers and 0.6% of cancer deaths in the U.S each year, with about 12,650 new cases and 3,880 deaths annually. The five-year survival rate is 61.5%. Men and older adults experience greater rates of laryngeal cancer, and tobacco use is generally considered to be the biggest risk factor for developing laryngeal cancer.

Larynx cancer incidence refers to the number of persons newly diagnosed with larynx cancer during a specified time period.

New Mexico Population Estimates

New Mexico Tumor Registry
In agreement with the New Mexico Tumor Registry, to ensure confidentiality the count of cancer cases is suppressed for any given county if the count is between one and four and the population is less than 1,000. NOTE: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted health services, leading to delays and reductions in cancer screening, diagnosis, and reporting to some central cancer registries. This may have contributed to an observed decline in 2020 incidence for most cancer sites.
